Domaine Jamet Vernillon Condrieu 2023
Domaine Jamet is a well-regarded wine producer based in Ampuis, in the winemaking heart of the northern Rhône, and best-known for its classical Cote Rotie wines. The estate comprises approximately seven hectares (17 acres) of vines planted in a number of small plots in the Côte Brune and the Côte Blonde subregions of the Côte Rotie. Plantings are nearly all Syrah, with small amounts of Marsanne, Viognier and Roussanne.
The domaine was founded by Joseph Jamet, who in 1950 acquired a tiny plot of land and began selling fruit to négociants. Domaine Jamet began bottling its own wines in 1976 and, following Joseph's retirement, his sons Jean-Luc and Jean-Paul took over the family business.
The global touchstone for Viognier, Condrieu is the bold and perfumed white wine grape's heartland with stellar producers, stellar wines and sometimes stellar prices.
Condrieu is arguably the northern Rhône's most distinctive wine appellation. Created in 1940, it covers white wines made exclusively from Viognier. In contrast, its larger neighbors of Saint-Joseph, Crôzes-Hermitage and Côte Rôtie specialize in robust reds made from Syrah.
Condrieu's whites strike an unusual balance between delicate perfume and substantial body. They are produced only in tiny quantities, and only in seven parishes. These are Limony, Chavanay, Malleval, Saint-Michel-sur-Rhône, Saint-Pierre-de-Bœuf, Verin and Condrieu itself.
Critical Acclaim
92 James Suckling
A vivid, precise and attractive Condrieu with succulence and aromatic charm. It exhibits notes of white peaches, dried lemons, blanched almonds and wild herbs. It's medium-bodied with fresh acidity. Well rounded, with a delicious pear and bitter-almond character at the center, providing plenty of freshness. Flavorful finish. Drink or hold.
