Barolo Wine

View Full Description [+ Read More]

Barolo is a red wine appellation in the Langhe hills of Piedmont, Italy, built entirely on Nebbiolo, a grape known for high tannin, high acidity, and aromas of tar, roses, and dried cherry. The zone divides broadly between the Serralunga d'Alba side, where compact Helvetian soils produce austere, long-lived wines, and the La Morra and Barolo communes, where Tortonian soils of mixed limestone and clay yield earlier-maturing, more aromatic expressions. Single-vineyard sites called MGA - Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive - define much of the top tier, including Sarmassa, Annunziata, Mosconi, and Bricco delle Viole. Marchesi di Barolo and Giacomo Borgogno represent the appellation's historic continuity, while G.D. Vajra, Paolo Scavino, and Conterno Fantino reflect the precision-focused modern generation. Vintages here range from the cooler 2014 to the warmer 2020, each rewarding patience in the cellar.
