Highlights

From steep east- and northeast-facing slopes above the Pacific, this Pinot Noir comes from clay, silt, and volcanic gravel soils that lend polished tannins, body, and a hint of mineral graphite. It shows dark cherry, plum, cranberry, and red cherry with tea leaves, mint, forest earth, licorice, new leather, espresso, and spicy accents; structured by vibrant acidity and silky tannins, it was made in 979 cases and will be released in April 2025.

‘Le Caprice‘, as in “Capricious,” is an ode to the fickle nature of the Pinot Noir grape. Situated above sea level on steep mountain slopes, some exceeding 50 percent in grade, the vineyard faces east and northeast. It benefits from both the cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean to the west and the mild, sunny mountain climate. The soil of the vineyard is a composite of clay, silt, and volcanic gravels, which help the wine display polished tannins, body, and a hint of mineral graphite. ‘Le Caprice’ delivers the most pronounced profile of red fruit of our three estate Pinot Noir wines.

Critical Acclaim

95 Vinous

The 2023 Pinot Noir Le Caprice is a potent, young wine. A blast of dark cherry, plum, new leather, licorice, French oak and espresso stains the palate. Readers should plan on cellaring the 2023 for at least a few years, as it is very much an infant today.

95 Wine Advocate

I tasted the 2023 Pinot Noir Le Caprice as a sample just before it was bottled. It has slowly unfolding aromas of cranberry, red cherry, tea leaves and mint, becoming more floral as it airs in the glass. The palate is layered and concentrated with woodsy, earthy flavors evocative of a forest. It’s structured by silky tannins and vibrant acidity and boasts a flourish of spicy accents on the long finish. A total of 979 cases were made, and the wine will be released in April of 2025.

94 Jeb Dunnuck

From the Sonoma Coast, the 2023 Pinot Noir Le Caprice Estate pours a youthful ruby color and is ripe on the nose with aromas of raspberry liqueur, toasted spice, brambly ripe herbs, and fresh earth. The palate is medium-bodied, with ripe tannins that have a bit more breadth and richness, but it retains a refreshing acidity and has a long, spiced finish.

Yes, in most cases, the photograph on the product page is of the specific bottle for sale. If we have multiple quantities of the same item, the photo represents the general condition of all bottles under that SKU. Any significant condition issues, such as low ullage or bin-stained labels, will be clearly noted in the product description. We use premium, industry-standard materials to protect every shipment. Depending on the bottle and destination, we use a combination of insulated foam box inserts, custom-fit air column bags, and heavy-weight cardboard shippers to prevent damage. For wine, we recommend storing bottles on their side in a dark, vibration-free environment with good humidity, ideally between 55-60°F. Spirits like whiskey should be stored upright in a cool, dark place (60-70°F) away from direct sunlight to preserve their quality.
