Pappy Van Winkle 20 Year Old Family Reserve Bourbon is a Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey defined by its extensive 20-year aging period and wheated mashbill. Bottled at 90.4 proof, this expression represents a small fraction, less than 3 percent, of Buffalo Trace's wheated inventory deemed suitable for extended maturation.

Produced at the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, this bourbon utilizes a wheated mashbill composed of corn, wheat, and malted barley, omitting rye. The new spirit enters #3 char barrels at 114 proof before aging for two decades in cooler sections of the distillery's brick warehouses. Significant evaporation, known as angel's share, exceeds 50 percent during this long maturation, resulting in very low yields, often fewer than 120 bottles per cask. This 20 Year Old expression achieved a notable 99/100 score at the World Spirits Championship. It is presented unfiltered, proofed down to 90.4 (45.2% ABV) for approachability.

This bourbon is released annually each fall in highly limited quantities and is known for its scarcity. Availability is typically brief due to intense collector demand.

Tasting Notes

Rich, soft and sweet oak with custard. The mouthfeel is like silk, and Preston Van Winkle likens this to a classic Cognac, and we reckon he’s onto something. The maturity, smooth/oily feel of this on the tongue, coupled with musty fruitiness sum up what we love about a decent XO, this is sublime.

Stewed fruits on the nose, sweet spices, oiliness, white chocolate, walnut.

Good length, with hints of honeycomb, peppery spices and prune.
