Opus One 2022

Opus One 2022 - Flask Fine Wine & Whisky

Professional Ratings

Wine Spectator

“Offers the vintages up-front profile, but with lighter body and more freshness, rather than a gush of fruit and sheer overtness, as the red currant, damson plum and cherry coulis notes show subtle red licorice, rose petal and savory streaks. This has genuine length too, with a touch of iron minerality. A little subdued overall, but a strong effort for the vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. -- Non-blind Opus One vertical (July 2025). Best from 2026 through 2036. 24,200 cases made.”

Wine Spectator

“Shows a lighter-bodied, fresher profile than most in this vintage, with a mix of red currant, damson plum and cherry coulis notes stitched with savory, tobacco and rose petal accents. Theres a subtle cedar shading through the finish, with a flicker of iron at the tail end. Takes a modest approach to escape most of the pitfalls of this extreme vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Best from 2027 through 2037. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 24,200 cases made.”

Highlights

0.5% Malbec completes the blend; aged 18 months in French oak after early picking beginning 24 August 2022. Aromas of chocolate, cherry and rose petal with soft cedar shavings, vanilla bean and bramble fruit lead to a juicy, concentrated palate with creamy, slightly grippy tannins, a persistent finish with a hint of almond, and pairs with pasta, red and white meats, cheeses and cured meats.

Opus One 2022

Opus One 2022 exudes charm and sophistication from the glass. Primary aromas of blueberry, cassis, and dried rose petals with underlying notes of olive, cigar box, and graphite create a rich and inviting bouquet. On the palate, bright red-fruit flavors, cocoa, and fresh orange peel waltz together into a harmonious and balanced profile. Long and elegant, the finish delivers touches of wet stone, vanilla, and a hint of coffee. Fine-grained tannins and juicy ripeness signal the promise of a long future in the cellar. Blend 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 6.5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, 0.5% Malbec

Critical Acclaim

96 James Suckling

Generous, with savory aromas of ripe blackcurrants and fresh black cherries and a gentle texture that shows a slight nip of tannin. It is well structured and a bit tight, which is normal for a young cabernet sauvignon-based red that’s a proven collectible. Gives up graphite and pencil shavings, some cocoa and espresso. Full-bodied. Spicy, toasty oak is really showing through right now. Best from 2028.

95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Picked before, during and after the year's early September heat, the 2022 Opus One—a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 6.5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot and 0.5% Malbec—admirably reflects the vintage, boasting a ripe, extroverted personality but also a slightly open-knit, coarser mouthfeel than either the 2021 or 2023. Rosemary and sandalwood notes accent cherries on the nose, while the medium- to full-bodied palate is expansive and plush, finishing with ample length and soft tannins.

94 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2022 Opus One shows the sunny, perfumed style of the vintage. Black raspberries, smoked tobacco, incense, and spicy wood notes all define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a supple, layered mouthfeel, velvety tannins, and a great finish. I’ve been lucky enough to do many retrospectives of this wine, so I have no doubt it will evolve gracefully for a solid two decades.

92 Vinous

The 2022 Opus One is a soft, relatively easygoing wine from an extremely challenging vintage in which the estate decided to pick straight through the heat. The 2022 offers terrific brightness throughout. Today, the tannins are a bit searing in their intensity, so it will be interesting to see how things ultimately shake out here. I find the 2022 is a bit edgy in its contours at this stage.
