In the foothills of the Alps, way up in the north of Piedmont, sits the “heroic” Carema DOC, and at just 39 acres of vines, it’s one of Italy’s smallest wine regions. This steeply pitched, high-elevation area requires hand cultivation of its mostly Nebbiolo vines, so the winemakers who gravitate to this small but mighty region are special indeed. Gian Marco is one of those special people, and his five-acre Monte Maletto estate, founded in 2015, is on the trajectory to cult status. Before becoming a winemaker, Gian served as a sommelier to many high-profile, Michelin-star restaurants, so it follows that he crafts his wines to transmit his schist-laden, sandy glacial terroir. In addition to growing Nebbiolo and Erbaluce on his own lands, Gian rents plots in nearby Canavese for a more expanded Monte Maletto line. 

The 2023 Nebbiolo Battito del Maletto is laced with hints of dried cherry, crushed leaves, iron and game. Deceptively light in body, the Nebbiolo packs a pretty serious punch. The 2023 is very attractive texturally... Give this a year or two in bottle, as the tannins are a bit raw today.

For wine, we recommend storing bottles on their side in a dark, vibration-free environment with good humidity, ideally between 55-60°F. Spirits like whiskey should be stored upright in a cool, dark place (60-70°F) away from direct sunlight to preserve their quality.
