Dana Estates Hershey Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain Napa Valley 2022
Dana Estates is a wine producer of Napa Valley, loccated at the foot of the Mayacamas mountain range. It produces a range of premium single-vineyard wines, mostly from Cabernet Sauvignon with a small inclusion of Sauvignon Blanc.
There are three single vineyards spread across the Rutherford and Howell Mountain AVAs. The Helms Vineyard, in Rutherford, is planted solely to Cabernet Sauvignon, and is planted on gentle slopes with well-draining, gravelly loam soils.
Howell Mountain is one of Napa Valley's most prestigious hillside AVAs. It covers an area of land on the Vaca mountain range in the northern part of the valley, just above the town of St Helena.
A long, thin area, the Howell Mountain AVA measures about 10 miles (16km) from northwest to southeast and less than two miles across at its widest point around Angwin. The local vineyards are grouped in several distinct areas, carefully oriented according to the lie of the land, in contrast to the densely planted valley floor below. There is no Howell Mountain peak – the AVA is named for the tiny Howell Mountain township, which sits 1,690 feet (515m) above sea level.
Critical Acclaim

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Hershey Vineyard is just about pure perfection and is another heavenly Cabernet from this team. Gorgeous red, blue, and black fruits, spice, smoked tobacco, and dried herbs give way to a full-bodied, deep, rich, powerful 2019 that has velvety tannins and a rounded, opulent mouthfeel. It's not as structured or tannic as the Lotus, but this will nevertheless benefit from another 3-4 years of bottle age, and while it's already impossible to resist, it should evolve for 30+ years.

Subtle aromas of blueberries, boysenberries and black olives, then violets and lilacs. Bark, too. Medium-to full-bodied with extremely fine tannins that run the length of the wine. Compact and so long. Seamless. Class. Needs four or five years to open.

Hershey vineyard on Howell Mountain is 26 acres in total, 18 of which were planted in 2008. It is planted to just about all aspects imaginable, so it’s quite a varied site, although the Dana Hershey label comes mainly from just four blocks. This barrel sample of the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Hershey Vineyard is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon (clones See and 191) and is due to be aged for 25 months in French oak barrels, 100% new. Deep garnet-purple in color, it slowly emerges from the glass with notes of crushed rocks, graphite and mossy tree bark with a core of redcurrant jelly, wild blueberries and Black Forest cake plus a profoundly pure undercurrent of cassis. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is impeccably crafted with super-fine tannins and loads of earthy layers, lifted by amazing freshness, finishing long and perfumed. 467 cases are projected to be made. No Hershey vineyard was produced in 2018.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Hershey Vineyard is stellar. It possesses remarkable density and huge power, all in a mid-weight frame. Graphite, blue/purplish fruit, menthol, sage and lavender race across the palate, framed by bright, salivating acids and plenty of Howell Mountain tannin. Even with all its intensity, the Hershey remains medium in body and supremely elegant. This has really come along since bottling. Magnificent!
