Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr. Cured Oak returned in 2026 for the first time in more than a decade, reviving one of the most sought-after limited expressions in the Buffalo Trace portfolio. This new release is a 10-year-old, Bottled-in-Bond Kentucky straight bourbon bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV), carrying forward the unusual barrel-curing technique that defined the legendary original 2015 edition.
Cured Oak takes its name from the special barrels created for the whiskey. The white oak staves used to construct them were air-dried outdoors for 13 months, more than twice Buffalo Trace's typical curing period of approximately six months. That additional seasoning changes the character of the oak before the whiskey ever enters the barrel, allowing the bourbon to develop greater depth and complexity as it matures.
For the 2026 edition, Buffalo Trace chose a 10-year maturation rather than attempting to duplicate the 17-year age of the original release. The result places greater emphasis on the interaction between bourbon and the specially cured oak, preserving mature barrel character while retaining sweetness, structure and balance.
The nose opens with tobacco and dried fruit, followed by vanilla and toffee. Across the palate, those richer notes are joined by seasoned oak, producing a layered combination of sweetness, mature wood and darker fruit character. The finish is long and dry, with the influence of the extended stave curing lingering well beyond the final sip.
The return of Cured Oak is especially significant because this is not simply another batch of the original 2015 whiskey. The 2026 edition is a distinct 10-year release built around the same experimental 13-month stave-curing concept. Buffalo Trace brought it back as a rare limited offering rather than establishing it as a regular annual expression.
For E.H. Taylor collectors and enthusiasts of limited Buffalo Trace bourbon, the 2026 Cured Oak offers a rare opportunity to experience the concept that made the original release famous, interpreted at a different point in maturation and more than a decade after its debut.
