“Tasty, showing warm plum and anise notes that have melded nicely with hints of black tea, singed applewood and tobacco, offering an iron twinge through the finish. Nicely done. Drink now through 2020.”

Highlights

2012 vintage; mostly Merlot planted on clay-limestone parcels, harvested 1–16 October after an exceptionally dry 20 July–20 September concentration period. Reddish-purple with a violet tint; nose of black cherry and vanilla giving way to smoky, peaty notes with blond tobacco and dried flowers; palate lush and creamy with well-integrated tannins, morello cherry and almonds and a slightly marine cast, finishing fresh and flavourful with dark chocolate, saline and mineral tension.

The wine has a reddish purple colour with a deeper violet tint. Concentration on the nose is revealed with great refinement and complexity. Black cherry and vanilla aromas give way to deeper, smoky, peaty notes along with blond tobacco and dried flowers.

Refinement is everywhere on the palate as the lush and creamy attack expands over well-integrated tannins to mingle with generous and varied flavours reminiscent of morello cherry and almonds, with a slightly marine cast. The finish, flavourful and fresh with great tension, displays dark chocolate, saline and mineral notes.

The weather pattern in Pauillac in 2016 had two main features:

  • A very wet winter and spring, with more than half the annual rainfall occurring in the first four months of the year, including a record 240mm in January.
  • An extremely dry summer and autumn, without any significant rainfall, leading to a negative water balance at the end of the year.

The crop was large but the grapes remained rather small as a consequence of the summer drought, making for dense and concentrated wines. The grapes ripened slowly in hot weather in August and September, achieving excellent maturity. The harvest started on 28 September with the Merlot parcels and continued in perfect conditions until 15 October. Each grape variety and each parcel were vinified separately as usual, in order to allow them to express their brightest characteristics. The wines offer remarkable colour, intense aromas of fruit and spice, and a dense mouthfeel enhanced by rich and well-rounded tannins. By its density and consistency, the 2016 vintage compares with the finest vintages of the 21st century to date.
