Nizza Riserva needs to be 100% Barbera, from one of 18 designated communes, from hillside vineyards only with very low yield caps, a minimum of 13% ABV and 13.5% ABV if a vineyard name shows on the label, with at least 30 months overall aging including 12 months in wood. This very well-run cooperative sits across the street from our friend Virna Borgogno and just below Cannubi. Their Nizza Riserva, produced only during vintages with spectacular harvest conditions, is a standout.
Deep ruby red. Rich and deep, with aromas of blackberries and cranberries. Fragrant aromas displaying vanilla, caramel and coconut notes as well. Elegant and well balanced with a pleasant and persistent hint of coffee and blackcurrants.
Critical Acclaim
93 Wine Enthusiast
Vibrant blue- and purple-fruit aromas intertwine with delicate notes of iris and violet, complemented by sweet oak spice. Rich and lush on the palate, this wine maintains a remarkable balance, offering a generous and mouth-filling experience without overwhelming the senses. A solid structure supports the mouthwatering flavors, leading to a lengthy finish that leaves a lasting impression.
92 James Suckling
A structured barbera with ripe red fruit and nutty oak character to the nose. Medium- to full-bodied with the same balance of fruit and oak to start, but the oak expands as the palate progresses, adding a tannin feel and more and more savory notes. Feels a little raw just now, but should meld together nicely with a year or two in bottle. Try from 2025.
