“A polished mahogany hue, this is reminiscent of tawny Port on the nose, carrying the theme on the palate with a thread of roasted nuts that underscores notes of dried apricot, butterscotch and dried mint. The rich profile is still bright and balanced today by lively, mandarin orange peel acidity, and the finish echoes milled white pepper, white truffle and lemon oil. -- Non-blind Vin de Constance vertical (February 2024). Drink now through 2036. 1,665 cases made, 250 cases imported.”
Highlights
Klein Constantia Vin de Constance 2001 500ml
These historic vineyards were first planted in the late 1600s as part of the original Constantia estate, whose legendary sweet wines were celebrated in literature by Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and Baudelaire. It was sought after by Napoleon, in his exile, and by the courts of Europe in the 18th and 19th century. Chosen for its soil of decomposed Table Mountain granite, and its cooling sea breezes from both the Atlantic and Indian oceans, these vineyards provide the perfect terroir for premium winegrowing. The nose on this 2001 vintage is a heady mix of floral Muscat and fresh citric notes with signs of honeyed maturation. The palate is well balanced with wonderful flavours of dried mangos, dried apricots and honey, with a long fresh finish.
