Domaine de la Denante Macon La Roche Vineuse 2024
Damien Martin has really taken on his inheritance and run at it with vigour. When we first visited, Damien was just joining the domaine of his father Robert, but he quite quickly took over and the domaine and our level of business with him as grown steadily since.
We began by choosing him as the supplier of our own-label 'White Burgundy', from the 2011 vintage, which has always been from his his 1.66 ha plot in Macon-Davayé. The Domaine now has 25 hectares of its own, 10 in Saint Véran, with special cuvées being made from 1.8ha in Maillettes, .6ha in Fournaises, and .29 ha in aux Cras. it also has 4 hectares in Verzé, 4 in la Roche Vineuse, 1 in Pouilly Fuissé (high up in Vergisson).
Mâcon La Roche-Vineuse is an appellation in the Mâconnais region of Burgundy. It covers the communes of La Roche-Vineuse, Chevagny-les-Chevrieres and Hurigny. The title covers white wines produced exclusively from the Chardonnay grape variety.
Within the zone vineyards are sited at altitudes between 250 and 425 meters (820-1,395ft). Orientations and slope angles vary, and soils vary from fine, fossil-rich limestone to heavy marls.
The village of La Roche-Vineuse was previously known as Saint-Sorlin. This name derives from Saint Sernin, a third century bishop of Toulouse. Some of the earliest documented references to the Gamay and Chardonnay grapes from the late 1600s are made with respect to Saint-Sorlin.
