“Solid for the vintage, with black currant preserves backed by hints of warm earth, licorice and roasted alder. Offers some grip without the vintage's austere grain. Sweet tobacco echoes on the finish. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2033. 1,700 cases made, 50 cases imported.”
Chateau Certan De May de Certan Pomerol 2021
The Certan de May has turned out very well, offering up aromas of rich cherries, cassis, loamy soil and creamy but nicely integrated new oak. Full-bodied, layered and lively, with fine concentration, powdery tannins and a long, penetrating finish, this is beautifully balanced Pomerol that no doubt benefits.
Chateau Certan de May takes its name from the long-standing tradition of honoring the founding owner, the Demay family. The Demay’s were the first owners of the Pomerol property. In the late 1700s, the vineyards of what is thought of as Vieux Chateau Certan and Certan de May were part of one large Pomerol property.
The estate was divided after the French Revolution into smaller plots. The Demay family obtained 5 hectares of land that was called Petit-Certan. The Demay’s gave a new name to their Right Bank vineyard combining their family name and that of the vineyard.
