Highlights
Jean Claude Lapalu Brouilly 2023
Lapalu's Cuvee des Fous has a sunny, luminous disposition. From warmer, old vine parcels, this cuvee is reminiscent of Gramanon's Centenaire cuvee. Very concentrated with filagreed tannins and a dark fruit profile, Cuvee des Fous has lovely length and real harmony.
From a family of wine makers, Jean-Claude Lapalu settled at the family domain in Beaujolais in 1982. After a few years of sending his grapes to the cooperative, he started making his own wines in 1996. He gradually found his own path and discovered his own style, developing natural vinifications with little intervention. The work in the vineyard has become much more eco-friendly and more respectful of the terroir. The 12-hectare vineyard is certified organic, the soil is ploughed, and the rows are covered with grass. Jean-Claude Lapalu has a superb viticultural heritage, including many mature vines, some of which are over 100 years old. A top Beaujolais domain!
Lapalu’s Cote de Brouilly is a more structured, mineral-driven and concentrated Cru Beaujolias. With smoky aromas and a density of fruit on the palate, this is a bit on the more rustic end of the Gamay spectrum.
50+ year old vines growing in clay-centric soils with blue stones on granite bedrock. Vinified in tank, with semi-carbonic maceration/fermentation over a 3 week period. Aged 6-8 months in used tonneaux. Then assembled in tank for one month prior to bottling. No Fining and filtration. 10 mg SO2 at bottling.
