The one and only Bosquet des Papes, the six-generation domaine that put the Chateauneuf appellation on the international map 100 years ago with their 'Chante le Merle' cuvee. Those of you who seek imposing, powerful, old-school Chateauneuf of the "garrigue-and-iron" persuasion know all about this legendary producer.

The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape A La Gloire De Mon Grand-Père is mostly Grenache (there are tiny amounts of Cinsault and Clairette) that were all from the La Gardiole lieu-dit and was partially destemmed and brought up mostly in demi-muids. It has incredible purity in its vibrant aromas and flavors of black raspberries, fresh-cut flowers, licorice, graphite, and chalky minerality. These all carry to a full-bodied Grenache offering ultra-fine tannins, a layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, and a gorgeous finish. I'd put this beauty up with the crème de la crème of the vintage. It’s a stunning success in 2022.

A robust, dense and dark-fruited blend of 98% grenache and 2% cinsault and clairette. The nose expresses notes of dark cherries, blackberries, dried herbs, charred bark and a touch of smoke. Full-bodied with fine, firm tannins. There is a crushed blue-fruit character. Nicely framed, with tannins coating the palate and a core of dark cherries, dark chocolate and plenty of spices. The finish is focused, intense and long. Try after 2028.

A barrel sample of the 2022 Châteauneuf du Pape A la Gloire de Mon Grand-Père—from 70-year-old Grenache in the lieu-dit la Gardiole—was impressive for its concentration and richness, qualities it married seamlessly with hints of violet-like florals, briary black raspberries and savory undertones of black olive. Full-bodied and reasonably tannic, expect this wine to need some time in the cellar after release yet to drink well for up to two decades.

A stunning, concentrated red, with a deep well of juicy cherry and raspberry coulis firmed up by crushed, chalky mineral energy and juniper and black licorice details. Smoky incense and freshness bring finesse despite the weight. The tannins are silky and pure. Oak sits nicely in the backdrop, allowing the purity of fruit and graphite power to shine. Best from 2026 through 2042.

Mixing 98% Grenache, 1% Cinsault and 1% Clairette, the 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape A la Gloire de Mon Grand-Père is magnificent. Showcasing pronounced raspberry jam, licorice, white pepper and ripe black fruits with a little herbaceous twist, the 2022 touches the palate with ample energy. Offering boatloads of sweet-tasting fruit complemented by vivid acidity and polished tannins, this is an ambitious A la Gloire de Mon Grand-Père that will see its 20th birthday in full glory.
