Since 1974 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars has only made their Cask 23 in exceptional vintages, usually blending their most distinctive fruit from their acclaimed S.L.V. and Fay estate vineyards. While much of the S.L.V. vineyard has been replanted, Block 4 remains from the original 1972 planting and the fruit from this site, with its volcanic soils, adds complex structure, concentration, and a spicy intensity to the Cask 23. The alluvial soils of the Fay vineyard act like a yin to the S.L.V.'s yang, contributing a lush perfume and rich berry flavors. Together, in the astonishingly good 2004 vintage, this combination leads to a wine that is already showing incredible depth and finesse in its youth. Classic cassis and blackberry aromas wrapped in toffee and vanilla play off of the savory aromas of rosemary, truffles and cocoa powder on the wine's exuberant bouquet. On the palate, the wine shows a core of dark berry, cassis and cherry fruit, highlighted by flavors of dark chocolate, espresso and vanilla. Silky tannins carry through to the wines gratifying, fruit-full finish.

For wine, we recommend storing bottles on their side in a dark, vibration-free environment with good humidity, ideally between 55-60°F. Spirits like whiskey should be stored upright in a cool, dark place (60-70°F) away from direct sunlight to preserve their quality.
