Nikka Miyagikyo Single Malt Japanese Whisky
The Miyagikyo is Nikka’s second distillery, having been founded in 1969. The distillery uses chimneys and large steel stills, so its whiskies tend to be fruity and light, in comparison with the heavier Yoichi whiskies. This affordable, non-age statement, single malt is perfect for those wishing to try out the wonderful whiskies that come from the Miyagikyo distillery. Elegantly fruity with sherry-cask character. ABV 45%.
On the nose, it starts off intense and rich with sequential development of Malted barley flavors accompanied by banana, licorice, and camphor. The aromas are packed with flavor that appears later on like burnt wood and ash. When they settle, notes of white flowers and beeswax can be detected. The tongue also experiences a carousel of tastes that are firm and lively at the same time.
The soul of the drink is malted barley which is further blanketed in licorice, herbs, ginger, chocolate, and cinnamon. Tobacco leaves also make an entrance mid-palate and leave you refreshed. This power-packed drink possesses a long and soft finish with an essence of wilted roses and fine tannins that balance the tang in it.
Tasting Notes
Firm, lively. Malted barley is at the heart of the palate, coated in herbaceous, liquorice, spiced (ginger, cinnamon) and chocolate tones. Very elegant, the mid-palate also delivers plenty of energy and as it draws to a close, fresh tobacco leaves and coconut intertwine to create a natural symphony of aromas.
Full-flavoured, rich. Initially, concentrated iris notes hint at the extreme intensity of the nose. It then develops aromas of malted barley, exotic fruit (banana), liquorice and camphor. Notes of burnt wood and ash progressively settle over the aromatic palette. Long after, white flowers and beeswax make an appearance.
Long, soft. It evokes the scent of wilted roses. Fine tannins balance its tangy character (lemon, grapefruit). It lingers on notes of tobacco, spices (cardamom, ginger), toasted nuts and stewed fruits (apple, damson). The final nose reveals exotic notes (lychee).
