This Pommard 1er Cru "Les Rugiens" 2024 from Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard comes from the eponymous locality, considered by enthusiasts as the greatest terroir of the appellation, worthy of a Grand Cru. This 100% Pinot Noir expresses all the iconic power of its iron-rich soil.
The wine opens with an intense and deep nose of wild dark fruits (blackberry, blueberry), fine leather, undergrowth, and peppery spices. On the palate, the structure is athletic, dense, and solidly built on firm but ripe tannins, promising exceptional aging potential. A monument of the Côte de Beaune to be reserved for fine cuts of meat and game.
Céline Fontaine-Gagnard, the talented vigneron at Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard.
Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard was founded by Laurence Gagnard – the daughter of Jacques and Marie-Josèphe Gagnard – and her husband Richard Fontaine in 1985.
Today Céline Gagnard is running the estate … tuning in the refinement and delicacy of the wines. These are rapidly becoming a favourite of the Winehog … with lovely plots in Montrachet, Batard Montrachet, Bienvenue Batard-Montrachet and Criot-Batard- Montrachet, brilliant plots in Cailleret.
The style has been refined to adapt to the effects of global warming and now seems to have an ideal blend of old-school Chassagne (Ramonet) with a modern, refined touch to cheer the palate with a feminine touch.
2024 is a great opportunity to visit Fontaine Gagnard. Elegant and refined, the style of the wines is fabulous without the slight hint of slightly excessive richness found in some more velvety years. The 2024s are delightfully elegant, as they are very faithful to the display of the individual terroirs.
The Chassagne village is delicate and refined with a lovely phenolic ripeness. The 2024s do have a lovely low alcohol and almost perfect phenolic ripeness in all the wines. This is freshly styled and classic!
The Pommard Rugiens Hauts is showing this lovely terroir in a very forward and fruity way. Rugiens Hauts is from relatively young wines, but shows very well however, struggle with the Volnay for pure delicacy and seductiveness.
