“Dark, dense and brooding, this is packed with beautiful notes of violet and spices overlaying a thick core of steeped plum and acai berry. Earthy and savory, with loamy soil and cigar box notes adding to the textural depth and complexity. Hints of camphor and barnyard give this an appealing, old-school feel. A blast of alpine herbs adds lift to the broad and lengthy finish. Best from 2027 through 2040. 216 cases imported.”
Highlights
Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas 2022
For lovers of the Northern Rhone Auguste Clape needs zero introduction. Even those less familiar with the slopes along the river where Syrah reigns supreme have often heard the name. Clape is that important.
He almost single-handedly brought his home village of Cornas out of the old, négociant-centered model and into the estate-focused 21st Century. A former mayor of Cornas, his name is now synonymous with the best of what this village has to offer.
August sadly passed in 2018 after nearly fifty years of winemaking, leaving the iconic estate in the hands of his son and grandson.
Critical Acclaim

Tasting this very powerful and concentrated Cornas is like listening to a piece of organ music when the bass kicks in. Very meaty. A wealth of blackberry aromas unfurls as it aerates in the glass. More than enough fruit and flesh to wrap around the imposing core of beautifully crafted tannins. The deep bass notes echo on and on in the compelling finish.

The 2022 Cornas isn't going to match the 2020, but we're not far off. Tasted in its individual components, it has the riper yet still focused, structured style of the vintage, with classic aromatics of blue fruits, violets, iron, and ample textbook Clape bloody, meaty nuances. It's not going to be a massive Cornas and is more medium to full-bodied, with ultra-fine tannins and beautiful balance. It's a brilliant Clape in the making, as well as one for the traditionalist out there.
