Domaine Vacheron Sancerre Chambrates is a Sauvignon Blanc with a raw and elegant expression. Grown in fossil-rich limestone soils, it exhibits purity of fruit with aromas of lemon zest, white flowers, grapefruit, jasmine, and a touch of smokiness. The wine has a crystalline texture, high acidity, and a pronounced mineral profile reminiscent of chalk and dried herbs.
An Atlantic breeze whispers its history: the dream of making this Domaine Vacheron Sancerre Chambrates, the fruit of an obsessive quest for mineral purity, of a family that has been interpreting the Sancerre soil like a silent score for generations. The Vacheron Sancerre Chambrates vineyard - a unique parcel of fossil-rich limestone soils - was for years observed with respect until, in a bold decision, it was decided to vinify it separately. Here, the Sauvignon Blanc achieves a raw and elegant expression, without embellishment or artifice. The continental climate, with cool nights and mild days, provides natural tension, while biodynamic viticulture - practised with almost ascetic precision - becomes the common thread between soil and wine. There are no shortcuts, just a faithful interpretation of the place.
Located in one of Sancerre's narrow, winding streets, cousins Jean-Laurent and Jean-Dominique Vacheron make benchmark Sancerre from organic and biodynamically farmed single vineyards. They start with good base material, having old vines on some of the best sites, predominantly in the east of the appellation, whether it’s Les Romains (flint), Le Paradis (limestone-based), Chambrates (limestone and clay) or Guigne-Chèvres (a rare north-facing site of flint over clay-limestone), the latter is my personal favorite. The single vineyard wines are all fermented in large wooden tanks, while its straight Sancerre Blanc, a blend of parcels (limestone 45%, flint 45% and 10% marl), is fermented in tank after being hand harvested.
Vacheron Sancerre Chambrates expresses itself with cutting finesse. On the nose, the first impression is one of purity: lemon zest, white flowers and a salinity reminiscent of wet stone. As it breathes, notes of grapefruit, faint jasmine and an almost volcanic smokiness emerge. On the palate, it is crystalline, with a fluid, electric texture. The acidity is sharp, but perfectly integrated, and guides a deep, tense, uncompromising mineral profile. The finish is dry, long, marked by chalk, dried herbs and a lingering freshness that invites the next sip.
