Shochu is an alcoholic beverage produced across the length and breadth of Japan. It is distilled from various ingredients including sweet potato, barley and long-grained rice. The Japanese word stems from Chinese characters which translates as "burned alcohol" in English. It refers to the distillation process through which shochu is produced.
