Vinho Verde

View Full Description [+ Read More]

Vinho Verde is a large Portuguese wine region in the northwest corner of the country, stretching from the Minho River border with Spain southward toward Porto, producing almost exclusively white wine under cool Atlantic influence. High rainfall and granite-based soils encourage naturally high acidity and moderate alcohol, with Loureiro and Alvarinho standing as the dominant grape varieties. The sub-region of Melgaço, near the Spanish border, yields some of the most structured expressions, as seen in the Reguengo de Melgaço Alvarinho bottlings from 2017 and 2018. Quinta de Azevedo's Reserva demonstrates the region's age-worthy potential, while Ameal's Loureiro and Quinta do Ermizio represent the lighter, crisper style characteristic of everyday Vinho Verde. Caves Messias rounds out the range with a food-focused bottling built around the region's naturally briny, mineral character.
