Famous for its full-bodied, seductive and spicy reds with flavor and aroma characteristics reminiscent of black cherry, baked raspberry, garrigue, olive tapenade, lavender and baking spice, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the leading sub-appellation of the southern Rhône River Valley. Large pebbles resembling river rocks, called "galets" in French, dominate most of the terrain. The stones hold heat and reflect it back up to the low-lying goblet-trained vines. Though the galets are typical, they are not prominent in every vineyard. Chateau Rayas is the most obvious deviation with very sandy soil.

A blockbuster, the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Bargeton was aged 80% in wood barrels and 20% in tanks. A blend of 78% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, and a dollop of Cinsault, it offers up huge aromas of garrigue, ground pepper, kirsch, and roasted meats. Dark plum/purple-colored, heady, alcoholic, full-bodied, and enormously proportioned, this 2003 is meant for true hedonists.

Dark red. Powerful, rich scents of blackberry, singed plum and blackcurrant. Deep flavors of kirsch and cassis, with a subtle hint of melted chocolate. Juicy and long, picking up power and weight as it opens in the glass.
