The 2016 Vin des Allobroges Cevins "Schiste" blends local grape varieties from the Savoie, such as Jacquère and Roussanne, with smaller parts of Malvoisie and Mondeuse Blanche. Grown on shallow schist and mica soils in a terraced, biodynamically farmed vineyard, this IGP opens with a warm, exceptionally ripe and intense yet clear, fresh and precise nose with delicate slate, floral and honey aromas in the background. Very pure, fresh, elegant and noble on both the nose and palate, this is a very fine, vital and complex Allobroges from Cevins whose intensity and full body is lifted by fine tannins, vibrant but delicate mineral acidity and lingering salinity. (Not sure malolactic is done here.) Fermented with natural yeasts and aged for 12 months in oak barrels, the 2016 was slightly filtered. It's a full-bodied, beautifully fine, fresh, elegant and persistently complex Cevins that can age for at least a decade.
