The Willett family has a strong history in the whiskey industry with members producing whiskey shortly after the Civil War. The business in its modern form was founded by Thompson and Johnny Willett in 1936 on the family farm. In 1984 , the company was purchased by Even Kulsveen, Thompson's son-in-law forming Kentucky Bourbon Distillers Ltd. The brand remains within the family holdings.
