Karlsmuhle's 2009 Lorenzhofer Riesling Auslese long gold capsule plays in an entirely different key from its fellows. A faintly stale bread-like as well as truffly expression of botrytis overlying notes of butterscotch prepares the way for a creamy, almost buttery palate packed with salted caramel and apple jelly but also harboring a veal stock-like sense of meaty savor. Emerging lemon-lime notes would be more welcome by way of refreshment if they were better-integrated. But some of that bifurcated impression may fade, and this is certainly an imposing, distinctive, and persistent performer an should remain so for at least 12-15 years.
