Old Grand Dad 114 Straight Bourbon

A full-proof version of this classic rye-tinged bourbon, unbelievably smooth for a spirit of its strength. Spicy orange-berry nose with tobacco notes and a spicy sweet taste. Plenty of rye flavor. Upon first nosing, this isn’t as big and bold as I was expecting for 114 proof. Relatively subdued, it’s sweet but spicy. There are notes of tobacco leaves and old wood with barrel char just under the surface. The heavy rye in the mashbill spice comes through, with a significant heat. Notes of oak, leather, and some bitterness from the char makes it feel like this has spent significant time in the barrel. There’s a touch of corn, but it comes off as less sweet than many other bourbons and instead cranks up the heat and spice to help keep you warm on those cold winter nights. The mouthfeel is pretty good.

Tasting Notes

The flavor contains more facets than the aroma and, like the nose, is nice and rich. Oak, caramel heavy dark sweets and dark fruit give way to, and mix with, notes of leather, hay, pepper and baking spices. A feathery light bit of vanilla comes and goes like a flash in the distance.

Rich and full the aroma is layered with notes of dark fruit, caramel heavy dark sweets, vanilla, bold spice, hay, oak and a syrupy sweet undertone.

Long and oaky with bits of hay, chunks of caramel and a light drizzling of syrupy sweetness.
