Faiveley Corton Clos des Corton Monopole Grand 2005 - Flask Fine Wine & Whisky

Faiveley Corton Clos des Corton Monopole Grand 2005

Domaine Faiveley is one of the largest and most illustrious domaines in Burgundy, and has made its name with red wines made from the Pinot Noir grape.

It was founded in 1825 in the village of Nuits-Saint-Georges under Joseph Faiveley, a wine merchant who had a desire for travel. In the beginning of the 19th Century, trade had begun between Burgundy and northern Europe, predominantly along the rivers and canals connecting the regions.

Critical Acclaim

95 Vinous

Good full medium red; showing less sign of development than the '07. Deeply pitched aromas and flavors of red berries, iron, spices and tobacco remind me a bit of the 2015 Clos des Cortons. Massive but still-brooding wine with terrific breadth and depth; much harder to taste today than the '07 owing to its higher acidity, lower pH and huge, building, tongue- and tooth-saturating tannins (the IPT here was very high 85, according to Jérôme Flous; in comparison, the index of total polyphenols in 2005 was 70 for Château Latour and 72 for Léoville-Las Cases). This voluminous wine shows stronger graphite minerality as it sits in the glass but still needs at least a few years in bottle to fully harmonize. It should be perfect with fatty meats and cream sauces owing to its surprisingly sound acidity.

95 Wine Enthusiast

One of Faiveley’s monopoles (wholly owned vineyards), Clos des Cortons makes powerful wines. That’s the case in 2005. This wine towers up, a strong edifice of tannins and big, black fruits. It has all the right elements coming into place, along with weight and some elegance.

94 Wine Spectator

Gorgeous aromas of ripe, sappy cherry and wild berry fruit, with floral notes. Racy and firm, with intensity and a strong mineral element. It's bolstered by dense tannins, but has the fruit to match. Give this time to reveal its facets.

For wine, we recommend storing bottles on their side in a dark, vibration-free environment with good humidity, ideally between 55-60°F. Spirits like whiskey should be stored upright in a cool, dark place (60-70°F) away from direct sunlight to preserve their quality.
