Domaine Font de Notre Dame Gigondas Le Mas 2023
Domaine La Font de Notre Dame, situated in the foothills of the Dentelles de Montmirail, is a family Estate managed and run by the Roux family. In 2016 Jean-Pierre Roux handed the reins over to his sons, Frédéric and Boris, who continue to impress us with their commitment to bringing us the beauty of their terroirs in a bottle. While the Domaine is based in Gigondas, they also have holdings in Lirac and Rasteau.
The cuvée name for the Gigondas is called "le Mas" after the estate's' farmhouse. It has a classy nose of ripe black fruits followed by hints of Garrigue herbs, licorice, and cigar leaf, with a firm but elegant and complex finish, ending with rounded spicy notes. The tannins have excellent grip and structure that, with underlying freshness, allows this beautiful wine to develop in bottle.
Gigondas is a commune in the southern Rhône valley and an appellation for red, rosé and, more recently, white wines. Best known for its reds, the appellation can produce blends of southern Rhône varieties to rival its more famous counterpart just to the southwest, Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The two are often compared.
The appellation is limited to the area of the Gigondas commune which, as well as the village, occupies a sizeable area covering the base and slopes of the western Dentelles de Montmirail foothills. The Dentelles de Montmirail run on a northwest-southeast axis, midway between Carpentras in the south and Vaison-la-Romaine to the north – some 40km (24 miles) northwest of Avignon.
The villages of Beaumes-de-Venise and Vacqueyras are located to the south and west of Gigondas respectively and enjoy very similar growing conditions. The communes of Sablet and Seguret, both communes in the Côtes du Rhône Villages appellation, lie immediately to the north.
