Balcones Texas Pot Still Bourbon 750ml
This new addition to Balcones’ lineup follows in the path the company’s Lineage release set forth. With Balcones’ particular style of distilling, their whiskeys have a very distinct taste. This can result in a love it or hate it attitude, though the company’s Lineage release found a very approachable middle ground. Balcones Texas Pot Still Bourbon is still Balcones through and through, but I was surprised by its approachableness, all while taking a step beyond Linage towards a more classic Balcones taste.
Where Lineage was distilled from 100% malted barley, Balcones Texas Pot Still Bourbon features undisclosed amounts of roasted blue corn, Texas wheat, Texas rye, and malted barley. This change definitely brings with it a darker flavor profile consisting of pecans, molasses, brown sugar, and fudge. Its 2 year age may seem young, but the company has found the hot Texas heat changes their whiskey much faster than distilleries north of it tend to. That said, there is a touch of youth present, but it nicely contrasts its roasted flavor profile. Balcones continues to surprise with each new release, and at this point, it might be more of a surprise if they didn’t.
