2010 Chateau Phelan Segur, Saint-Estephe

The vintage expresses a nose of great complexity with aromas of ripe red fruits and some toasted and liquorice notes. On the palate, the remarkable thickness of the attack is perfectly matched by the fleshy and crisp fruit of the mid-palate. The harmonious blend remains taut thanks to a beautiful freshness at the end of the tasting and a great aromatic power. This is a generous vintage with exceptional tannic power supported by a volume of rare density.

Aromas of blueberries and spices with hints of licorice too. Full body with firm tannins and a chewy finish. Extremely well-integrated. Beautiful. One of the best ever from here.

The best wine from Phélan Ségur for several years, this shows less of the often-intrusive new wood and more of the fruit that had been missing in past vintages. It shows a subtle level of toast and a black currant flavor, plus great acidity and freshness on the finish.

Allies solid density to subtle refinement, with steeped plum, currant, singed iron and charcoal notes. Lightly firm through the finish, showing a lovely tobacco edge, this should age gracefully. Best from 2014 through 2025.

Bright red-ruby. Dark cherry, smoke, graphite and tobacco on the expressive nose, plus a note of chocolatey ripeness. At once rich and very dry, with round, fine-grained flavors of plum, tobacco and minerals. Rather youthfully withdrawn today and hiding more than it's showing. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and intriguing suggestions of olive, herbs, minerals and pepper. A strong vintage for this property, but give it at least five years in the cellar.

A major sleeper of the vintage, the 2010 Phelan-Segur has a dense ruby/purple color, ripe mulberry and black currant fruit intermixed with some floral notes, and a hint of subtle oak as well as touches of lavender and licorice. Layered, opulent, ripe and fleshy, this beauty should drink nicely for 10-15 years. Drink through 2028.
