Leopold Bros Three Chamber Rye Cask Finish Cask Strength 8 Year Old Straight Bourbon
Based out of Colorado, Leopold Bros. is a family-owned distillery run by Scott and Todd Leopold. Originally started in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1999, the distillery was moved to Colorado in the mid-2000s, and the current distillery space they operate out of opened in 2014. The company floor malts their barley onsite, where they currently have the largest traditional floor malting room of any distillery in the United States.
The bottle employs the company’s new “Proof-it” NFC tag system. Scanning the top of the bottle provides you with the bottle tag, and claiming the bottle as yours reveals the exact bottle number and the number of bottles in each batch. Additionally, a video from the company shows how the bourbon was produced. NFC tags have been used in the past by Buffalo Trace Distillery for tamper-proof measures; however, it’s nice to see Leopold utilizing them in a way that provides additional useful information to consumers both pre- and post-purchase. Notably, once the bottle is opened, this feature is no longer functional.
To create this release, the company takes their 8 year old bourbon and finishes it for several months in their used Three Chamber Rye barrels. The result is a unique bourbon that is clearly influenced by its finishing barrel. It opens with a funky nose that is unique and makes you pause to question what you’re smelling. More straightforward from there, its palate is full of sweetness and spice with a pleasing mouthfeel, which leads into a spice-filled finish. I’ve found the company’s standard bourbon to be lacking in the past; however, Leopold Bros 8 Year Old Cask Strength Three Chamber Finished Bourbon is anything but, and delivers an incredibly pleasing sip.
