Cesar Fernandez Diaz Espantaburros Clarete 2019

The orange-ish pink 2020 Espantaburros Clarete was produced with a blend of red and white grapes—Tempranillo, Bobal and Albillo Mayor—from two certified organic vineyards (but the wine is not certified) in Peñaranda de Duero in 1950. The grapes macerated between 12 and 36 hours in stainless steel before being pressed and put in barrel to ferment with indigenous yeasts. It matured in well-seasoned and neutral barrels of different sizes for 11 months. The wine is quite light with 12.5% alcohol and very good freshness and acidity (pH 3.05 and 8.11 grams of acidity), and it's floral and aromatic with notes of orange peel and a vibrant, medium-bodied palate and a very tasty and supple finish. 3,336 bottles were filled in April 2022.

César Fernández Díaz is a young producer in the zone of Ribera del Duero, where he has two hectares of vineyards in the village of Fuentelcésped planted between 70 and 100 years ago. He also buys organic grapes from 70-year-old vines in Peñaranda de Duero. The wines are very different from the average in the region, inspired by the wines from Gredos, with light extraction and unnoticeable oak. The wines are very fresh and lively, pleasant, aromatic and easy to drink. He started with 1,800 bottles in 2018 and is slowly growing—to 2,500 in 2019, 4,000 in 2020 and hopes to produce 4,500 in 2021 and 6,700 in 2022.

For wine, we recommend storing bottles on their side in a dark, vibration-free environment with good humidity, ideally between 55-60°F. Spirits like whiskey should be stored upright in a cool, dark place (60-70°F) away from direct sunlight to preserve their quality.
