Roger Sabon Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Prestige 1995
Roger Sabon is a family-owned estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with a range based around four different red Châteauneuf cuvées. The estate has 16 hectares (39.5 acres) under vine in Châteauneuf-du-Pape of which 15 are planted to red varieties, including Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre.
Winemaking is traditional with aging in a mix of barrels and vats of various sizes and ages. While the Prestige cuvée may be the flagship in terms of availability and quality-price ratio, Le Secret des Sabon is widely regarded as one of the best reds in the region – made largely from century-old Grenache vines, its price reflects its reputation. There is also a white Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a red Lirac and Côtes du Rhône.

Very perfumy up front, with game, tar and roasted vanilla bean aromas, followed by a silky palate of dried currant, plum and minerals. Lovely sandalwood hint on the finish, but plenty of fruit there as well.

The explosively rich, full-bodied, macho-styled, deep ruby/purple-colored 1995 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Prestige offers a smorgasbord of Provencal aromas including smoked herbs, freshly crushed black pepper, and black plum and kirsch-like fruit. Deep, powerful, and super-concentrated, this is a classic, old style, of Chateauneuf du Pape.
