In 1958, Paul A. Lux and David Sherman Sr. founded Luxco under the name David Sherman Corporation. Purchasing the Ezra Brooks brand from United Distillers in 1993 to concentrate on Bernheim and its brands, David Sherman was one of the many businesses that benefited from the initial United Distillers investment and subsequent Diageo divestment in bourbon.

As a result of Diageo selling Bernheim to Heaven Hill and trying to sell off its other undesired trademarks, they eventually added the faltering Rebel Yell and David Nicholson brands (both originally manufactured at the famed Stitzel-Weller) in 1999 and 2000, with Blood Oath following later.

The business was renamed Luxco in 2006, and since then, it has successfully restored the reputations and images of the vintage brands it now offers including Blood Oath, among others. They opened the Lux Row distillery in Kentucky in 2018 after initially operating without a distillery and outsourcing manufacturing to Heaven Hill. Early in 2021, it was revealed that MGP will buy Luxco. Until the 1 million liter Lux Row distillery has enough mature stock to be entirely self-sufficient, Luxco would receive whiskey for its brands from MGP's Indiana distillery.
