1990 Schloss Schonborn Hatten-heimer Pfaffenberg Riesling Auslese

Hattenheim is a historic wine-growing town in the Rheingau region of Germany. It is most famous for its Riesling wines, which are complex and rich with pronounced levels of acidity.

This small but important town sits below Hallgarten and between Oestrich and Erbach on the Rhine river. It has a number of Grosse Lage-classified sites within its bounds – Steinberger is the most famous, but Mannberg, Wisselbrunnen, Nussbrunnen and Hassel are also noted for their unique terroir.

Vines were first established in the area by the Kloster Eberbach Abbey, which was founded in 1136 by Cistercian monks. In medieval times the abbey is thought to have been the largest wine estate in Europe, with around 740 acres (300ha) under vine. The monks built a 4 meters (13ft) wall around the Steinberg vineyard to keep out thieves.
