Port Ellen
View Full Description [+ Read More]
Port Ellen was a single malt Scotch whisky distillery located on the southern shore of Islay, Scotland, known for producing heavily peated spirit before its closure in 1983. All remaining stocks were distilled during the active years of the 1960s through early 1980s, making every available bottle a finite artifact of that era. Official annual releases, including the 10th Release 1978 31 Year Old and the 1979 30 Year Old 9th Release, were bottled by Diageo at natural cask strength. Independent bottlers Gordon and MacPhail and Douglas Laing have also drawn from surviving casks, producing expressions such as the 1969 Gordon and MacPhail Cask Strength and the 1982 Douglas Laing 22 Year Old. Younger vintages like the 1982 Gordon and MacPhail Connoisseurs Choice represent relatively accessible entry points, while the 1969 Gordon and MacPhail Cask Strength and the 15th Release 32 Year Old stand among the rarest bottles in this range.
