Gramercy Cellars Inigo Montoya Tempranillo 2012

A Red wine from Walla Walla Valley, Columbia Valley, Washington.  Founded in 2005, Gramercy Cellars is the realization of Greg and Pam Harrington's dream to make fine wine in a special place.

Prior to founding Gramercy Cellars, Greg spent what seemed like a lifetime as a sommelier and wine program director for top chefs such as Joyce Goldstein, Emeril Lagasse and Wolfgang Puck. Since becoming the youngest American to pass the Master Sommelier Exam at the age of 26, Greg has been passionate about someday making his own wine. His Washington odyssey began in the Spring of 2004, at a backyard picnic in Brooklyn, hosted by the Walla Walla Wine Alliance. There, Greg and Pam tasted wines that surprised them. They were very different from what they had come to expect from American wines. These were wines that displayed earthy characteristics and balance.

Critical Acclaim

91 Wine Advocate

One of the few wines to see a large percentage of new oak and to show the better for it, the 2012 Tempranillo Inigo Montoya (there's 15% Syrah in a blend) was aged 80% in American oak and 20% in French oak. It has lots of black raspberries, kirsch, licorice, toasted spice and vanilla bean notes to go with a medium to full-bodied, elegant, polished profile on the palate. The tannin is perfectly ripe, it has integrated acidity and no shortage of length on the finish. Give it 2-3 years and drink bottles through 2027.

90 Vinous

Bright dark red. Black cherry and licorice aromas are lifted by a floral topnote. Juicy and firmly built, with ripe acidity giving punch to the black and red fruit and black pepper flavors. Firmly tannic, dusty wine with solid acidity. This wine used to show mostly red Bing cherry fruit character but now the fruit is picked slightly riper, noted Moss, who finds it "our best tempranillo yet." Oaky but not at all heavy.
