Bien Nacido Estate Old Vines Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 2014

Earthy aromas of turned soil meet with dark red currant and a layer of smoke on the nose of this estate bottling by the historic vineyard. Strawberry, smoked pork and a touch of the lavender show on the sip, which rides a strong acidity that arises in the midpalate and persists deep into the finish.

The 2014 Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Vineyards Old Vines emerge from the M and Q blocks, both planted in 1973. Interestingly, the Old Vines is quite a bit more delicate than the straight Bien Nacido Pinot. There is almost no impression of tannin, as all the elements are so well balanced. I expect that 2014 will reward readers with a long drinking window of pure pleasure.

The 2014 Bien Nacido Vineyard LXXIII Pinot Noir is developing beautifully, revealing aromas of red berries, plums, candied peel, sweet soil and fallen oak leaves. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, velvety and richly layered, with excellent energy and a long, pure finish. While this is beginning to unwind, give it another year or two in the cellar and then follow it for a decade. 90 cases were produced.

Another beauty is the 2014 Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Old Vines LXXIII, though it's more savory, structured and concentrated than the straight Bien Nacido. Blackcurrants, toasted spices, sour cherry underbrush and hints of salty earth all emerge from this concentrated, structured, yet still nicely textured 2014 that's going to be impressive for over a decade. Seeing a touch more new oak (40%), it saw 30% whole clusters and was bottled unfiltered.
