Grüner Veltliner is the signature grape of Austria and by far the nation's most widely planted wine grape. As Austria battles its way back to stardom in the international wine market, crisp, spicy Grüner Veltliner has been its flagship wine.

Classic Grüner Veltliner wines show citrus aromas (lemon peel and grapefruit) complemented by stone fruit and fresh vegetal notes and the variety's trademark hint of white pepper. But within this there are two key styles of Grüner Veltliner wine.

The Hirtzberger 2012 Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Rotes Tor offers pungent, piquant, invigoratingly tart and ultimately gripping impressions of rhubarb, orange rind, pineapple-near-the core, peach fuzz and peach kernel. In contrast with the transparency of the corresponding Kirchweg, this is palpably dense and compact as well as gripping, its long finish invigorating with almost electric intensity. Look for excitement through at least 2025.
