Toro is a wine region in Castilla y Leon, northwestern Spain. It is becoming increasingly well known for its powerful, full-bodied red wines made from Tina da Toro (Tempranillo). Very small amounts of white wine are also made.

It is named for the town of Toro, an ancient settlement just 65 kilometers (40 miles) east of the Portuguese border. It is located on the Duero River, which bisects the region's northern half.

The flagship 2017 Vatan checks in as 100% Tinta de Toro from a single vineyard and was brought up in new barriques sourced from Bordeaux and Burgundy. It offers a serious bouquet of ripe red and black currants, cassis, spicy oak, chocolate, and lead pencil shavings. This carries to a gorgeously pure, medium to full-bodied, concentrated red with ripe yet present tannins, impeccable balance, and a great finish. It's another terrific vintage for this estate, and this beauty will shine for over a decade. Best After 2022

This bold red sports cherry tart, cocoa, toast and fig flavors flanked with tar, wild herb and loamy earth elements. Sinewy tannins give structure and power through the lingering finish. Drink now through 2030. 2,500 cases made, 1,500 cases imported.

A rich, chewy Toro, but not overly powerful. It’s full and chewy with lots of tannins and a flavorful finish. Needs time to soften. Better in 2023. September 15, 2021
